Punk, soft toys and videotape
The great and irreverent and now sadly deceased artist, Mike Kelley is having a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou until August 5th. You might be tempted to bring the kids along, but it might be wiser to go this alone and to fully concentrate at the propos at hand. One can expect the usual frenzy of distressed childhood memorabilia, but the critique of society digs deeper here and installations evoke issues that stem from the darkest depths of childhood as well as his alliance with his punk band. The forefront of this exhibition focuses on the angst and ambitions of adolescent malaise but it is lifted by the plethora theatrical tragi-comic multimedia installations. Unsettling, witty and delightfully dark.
